Biology & mechanism

A 24-amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene, identified through screens for cytoprotective factors in Alzheimer's disease models. It signals through a trimeric cell-surface receptor complex and also binds IGFBP-3, with reported anti-apoptotic effects. Circulating levels decline with age.

What the research actually shows

Preclinical work reports neuroprotective and cytoprotective effects in cellular and rodent models. Human data are observational — associations between levels and ageing or disease — not interventional. No trials establish benefit from administration.

Regulatory status

Not FDA-approved.

Safety signals

No meaningful human safety data. Anti-apoptotic activity warrants theoretical oncological caution.
