The C-terminal tripeptide of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It retains anti-inflammatory activity while lacking the melanocortin-receptor pigmentary effects of the parent hormone. Evidence suggests uptake via the PepT1 transporter in intestinal epithelium and intracellular interference with NF-kB signalling, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine transcription.
Preclinical only. Rodent colitis models report reduced inflammation. Interest exists for inflammatory bowel conditions. No human trials establish efficacy.
